Does designing a bedroom sound to you like something only professional interior designers could do?

You will agree if I say it is not an easy task to make a bedroom stylish, but cosy and organised at the same time.

The good news is – we have created a super easy 11-step guide to help you own your room, whether you are designing a whole new bedroom or transforming your existing space.

Furniture Haven customers have successfully used this guide to get the most out of their bedrooms.

Let’s jump into it …

Step #1: Pick a colour palette

The fundamental step in designing a bedroom is choosing the colour palette. Once you have picked the colours that speak to you, you can build everything else around it.

The classic décor rule states that your colours should be chosen with a 60-30-10 ratio. According to it, 60% of the room should be the primary colour (the background colour), 30% should be the secondary colour (the complimentary colour that creates interest in the overall look), and 10% should be the colour used in accents.

But how to use these colours correctly?

  • Use your primary colour for walls, rugs, and large pieces of furniture.
  • Secondary colour will appear in curtains and smaller pieces of furniture.
  • The accent colour is best to be used in pillows, artwork and accessories.

Step #2:  Decide on the layout

Before deciding on the layout, ask yourself:

  • What furniture do I want to have in my bedroom?
  • How much space do I have?
  • What material do I want the furniture to be made of?

Once you have a rough idea of your room measurements and your preferences, you can arrange your furniture.

Pick a wall to place your bed. Make sure you can see the door and the window(s) when lying down, and you have enough light exposure. Your bed should be in the middle of the wall, so that you can have access from both sides. Both or either sides of the bed should be used for smaller pieces of furniture, like bedside table, tallboy, or chair.

Now that the most important piece, the bed, is there, you can arrange all other furniture (wardrobes, dressers, etc.), depending on the size of each wall.

Have you thought about the walls, yet?

Step #3: Decorate the walls

Decorating the walls may seem daunting. However, it is pretty straightforward.

If you already have the background colour (your 60% colour), you are halfway through. You don’t need to decorate every wall of your bedroom, but incorporating an accent wall or a statement gallery wall will bring your room together.

Now that we have talked about the walls,

Step #4: Don’t forget about the floor

If you do not have carpet floors, introducing a rug could make a huge difference.

You are free to play with textures and patterns, size and shape of the rug; as long as it meets your own needs and gives that room the warmth you are looking for in a bedroom.

Step #5: Make sure you have a lot of storage space

Your bedroom can be beautiful and elegant, but it can still get messy in the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

To avoid that be generous about your storage options. Storage boxes, an ottoman with storage, a dower chest – anything that meets your lifestyle needs.

Step #6: Bring in the accent pieces

If you are looking to incorporate more elements into the bedroom, use your 10% colour.

Here are some useful ideas:

  • Mirrors can help you visually expand your room
  • You can accentuate the room with a new bedhead or a painting
  • Add texture – fur, knitted blankets, rugs
  • Connect your details
  • Flowers will make your room look fresh

Step #7: Experiment with patterns

Do you want to go further and play with the patterns?

Do you want to do it like a pro?

Stick to 1:1:1 ratio for geometric patterns – one large, one medium-sized, and one small-sized. Keep in mind the 60-30-10 colour rule as well.

Use your accent pieces to connect the patterns successfully.

Step #8: Light up your room with different lighting options

Your bedroom must delight you and correct lighting might be all that it takes!

Do you already have a hanging light or a chandelier? Add a bedside lamp or a nightstand to make your bedroom cosier.

Don’t ignore your curtains or blinds – play with natural light to transform your room throughout the day.

Step #9: Add more pillows

You have probably thought about the bedding by now – your favourite materials, tones, and patterns that create the desired comfortable look and feel. And do you have just two pillows?

Pile on the pillows! Pillows have gone far beyond being just a sleep accessory; they are a huge decor element. Pillows will add so much style to your bedroom, and will guarantee the modern journal look that everybody is looking to achieve.

Step #10: Personalise your space

Create a space that reflects your personality!

Put out your collection, your musical instrument or a handmade toy on display to give the bedroom a character… Your character!

Or maybe it is the reading nook that can make this room even more special in your eyes?

Step #11: Make sure it is not too much

Last but not least, you want to make a space where you can get a good night’s sleep. So look around.

Remember, less is more! Always.

Keep your bedroom simple, relaxing, yet functional.
